What are cognitive training exercises?

Cognitive training exercises are exercises that are designed to train your brain, increase brain wave activity and improve your cognitive skills – brain based skills that we need to carry out any task from the simplest to the most complex such as attention, memory, organization, information processing, logic and reasoning and executive functions.

Just as we do physical exercises to strengthen our body muscles, we need brain exercises to strengthen our brain. Cognitive training exercises are one of many methods of treatments for ADHD.

Cognitive brain training exercises work on 2 levels:

  1. The cognitive level – develops and strengthens attention, concentration, memory, planning, visual and auditory perception etc.
  2. The neurological level – stimulates brain wave activity which improves attention and concentration. With better blood flow to the frontal lobe, the reception of neurotransmitters such as dopamine improves.

Cognitive brain training consists of many different exercises that work on the various cognitive skills. For example: Some exercises will work only on concentration and reaction time, others will work on visual processing, others on audio processing and so on. Usually, the training exercises will be part of a complete training program which will cover all or most of the relevant cognitive skills. The most efficient programs are personalized so by completing a whole program, you’ve basically got yourself covered.

How do cognitive training exercises work?

Although in the past, people thought the brain cannot be changed or “taught”, today, research shows that the brain is changeable. It’s called plasticity – our brain can be strengthened and changed.  Cognitive brain training exercises take advantage of this plasticity. By practicing certain exercises over and over again, we can “teach” our brain how to use our cognitive skills in a better and more efficient way.  Not only that, but if you practice consistently for a long enough period of time, the changes can become permanent. This is great news to all who are trying to avoid medication since brain training has no side effects and we do not become dependent on medicating ourselves in order to function properly.

How were cognitive training exercises developed?

The method of brain training was developed over many years and plenty of research has been done over that period, including repeated testing. Participants were hooked up to an EEG machine in order to test their brain-wave activity as they worked on the exercises. Over time, researchers found that certain exercises generate and strengthen the right level of brain wave activity to improve cognitive skills.
